in 2004 when john kerry was challenging george w. bush and we saw a similar debate performance where the challenger came out swinging, did very, very well. the incumbent president was a little bit on his heels mainly because sometime you're not used to being challenged by somebody in that type of setting. so we move to the next debate. it seems like mitt romney did very well on style, although substance might have been a different matter. >> speaking of substance, a lot of people thought this debate was more informative, but did these issues and ideas connect to the voters? >> i think so. you look at this abroad, there were so many statistics that were at issue. i did think it was a very substantive debate, but going on the substantive part, i think the next 24 hours or so, the obama campaign has the opportunity to seize on some of the facts that mitt romney was citing. one of the things he talked about, he said my tax plan isn't going to benefit wealthy high income americans, but every tax analysis out there shows that the wealthiest are going to be the ones who would end up getting

. >> reporter: even a rong debate performance by john kerry wasn't enough to defeat george w. bush, but debates matter because it's the first chance to size uthe candidates in unscripted moments one-on-one. brian? >> andrea mitchell, who by the way will be our fact checker during our live coverage of the debate wednesday night here on nbc. andrea, thanks. >>> more american deaths today in afghanistan. and the rising death toll numbers will bring more question about the mission in a very unsteady region. tonight we have special coverage of that region, many believe is at the brink, with americans there in harm's way. we have three reports this evening from ann curry, richard engel, and lester holt. we'll begin with lester in kabul in afghanistan. lester, good evening. >> brian, good evening to you. three americans, nearly a dozen others, killed in a suicide bomb attack in the eastern province of khost. for some time now military officials have been saying the taliban have been weakened and are avoiding direct conflict. still they are finding new and effective ways to strike. the three u.s. milit

techniques. he's helped george w. bush and john mccain. he coached mitt romney during the primaries. >> the object is to capture the imagination of both the audience and the press to make sure your message gets covered. one way to do that is to have a clever line >> schieffer: no one could deliver a line like ronald reagan. >> i will not make age an issue of this campaign. i am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience. (laughing) >> schieffer: with those words reagan turned concern that he had gotten old and doddy on its head. challenger walter mondale said later when i heard that, i knew i had lost. what would you consider successful debate? >> the things that matter the most to the voters, to hell with the candidates and to hell with the moderators and to hell with the handlers and to hell with the pundits, but the things that voters care the most about have been discussed and have been discussed in a way that they can now understand what the differences are. that's what these debates are really all about. >> do ever get sick of each other?

goes mitt romney's way. a big swing in the polls is possible. in 2000, al gore was ahead of george w. bush until their debates. gore lost nine points in the polls and he lost the white house. i'm steve handelsman, news4. >>> a white house official acknowledged today that hackers tried to infiltrate the white house computer system. the official said the attack was prevented and that the target was an unclassified network. the white house account contradicts an earlier story, that reported that hackers from china had broken into one of the u.s. government's most sensitive computer networks. today officials would not say whether the white house attack has been linked to china. >>> to a developing story involvie ining an american airl flight. it made an emergency landing today. the pilot got sick shortly after takeoff. a co-pilot took control. the plane landed safely in st. louis about noon eastern time. the pilot was rushed to a hospital. a new crew took over and flew the passengers on to dallas. the pilot's illness and condition are not known. >>> there was another problem on an americ

the middle class has been punished by the republican policies that crashed the economy under george w. bush. both campaigns hope swing voters in virginia will be watching the debate closely tomorrow night. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey talked to voters about why tomorrow night's performances will or won't influence their decisions. >> reporter: at the loudoun county election office, not all voters are waiting to cast their ballot. nearly 700 loudoun county residents have already completed their inperson absentee ballots. even those who made a choice say they will be watching the debate intently. this man who voted for mitt romney hopes the republican nominee can use the debate to win over swing voters. >> i hope that he'll take a strong stand on issues like immigration and the debt crisis. i mean, just make, explain things clearly. >> reporter: this voter who has already cast a ballot for barack obama wants the president to be aggressive in his debate approach. >> i'm hoping that he conveys his message in a more stern fashion than he has in the past. i don't think he is always

having this one debate, we saw george w. bush lose his first debate in 2004. we saw ronald reagan lose his debate against walter mondale in 1984, and those two were able to win the election. >> was this as chris christie said today, a wipeout or give the president a new opening? >> it gives him a potential new opening. the biggest thing we're going to see, and we won't be sure about the poll numbers to reflect this, this allows mitt romney to go on the offensive. over the last month mitt romney has been on the defensive, whether the controversial 47% comment, clint eastwood's dialogue with the empty chair at the convention. these presidential races go up and down, up and down, and i think we'll see more twists and turns during election day. >> a lighter moment. we saw big bird come up. and got a few chuckles. mitt romney was detailing cuts that he might make. let's listen in to a little bit from last night, if we can. >> i'm sorry, jim, i'm going to stop this subsidy to pbs. i actually like big bird, and like you, too. i'm not going to continue to spend money from china to pay for it.

-ford debates, the reagan-carter debates, and then clinton-george h.w. bush debates . and three times you saw the challenger take on the incumbent and win, the debates really mattered. the places where you saw the incumbent do well, for reagan versus mondale, i would argue carter versus dole, or bush versus kerry, the incumbent won. so the-- i think debates matter psychologically to the country. they're the most viewed single event in the campaign. and i think it's always a burden on the challenger-- this isn't about romney. it's about the challenger. the challenger has to make two cases. the incumbent should not be re-elected, and i would do a better job. it's a two-part. you first have to make sure people say, "yeah, obama's stagnation is unacceptable. " but then you have to say, "by the way, this guy will be better." romney, he doesn't have to hit a home run, but romney has to be at the end of the debate wednesday night, a clear alternative who is considered as a potelepresident by a majority-- potential president by the maiority of american people in order for his campaign to have a chanc

and one of them lost, george h.w. bush. >> reporter: romney got good news from three battlegrounds in florida. he's now behind by just one point. still way down in ohio. but in virginia, romney's down by just two. with a lot on the line in past debates, romney's done well. >> going up against mitt romney is not a fun thing. he's got the facts. he drills you, stays, tenacious. >> reporter: and sometimes aggressive. >> don't use a term like that. >> reporter: aides admit barack obama in debates can sound like a professorial know it all. >> i understand the broader point that senator clinton has been trying to make over the last several weeks. >> reporter: tonight's format is from 2008, two podiums, moderator jim lehrer, 90 minutes, no breaks. a back-and-forth on domestic issues with possible fireworks. >> i think you're going to see both of them be more aggressive than either of their campaigns have predicted, because the stakes are pretty high. >> reporter: the contest could get even tighter after tonight's clash. but most here in denver agree, this race could be decided by this deb
